Join the MCU Spending Freeze Challenge – $300 to Winner

Are you a savvy saver? Or, are you looking for the right motivation to change your financial habits? Join the MCU Spending Freeze Challenge for a chance to prove your skills and begin your journey down the road to savings supremacy. One lucky winner will receive $300. Here’s what you need to know:

For 10 days, Jan. 26 to Feb. 4, participants can’t spend a dime (unless it’s on our “Okay-to-Spend” list, but more on that in a moment). No morning coffee run, no fast food, no impulse purchases. Then, you’ll chronicle your experience with a daily submission in the comment section of this blog post. We want to know what surprises you during the challenge. Tell us all about the creative recipes you’re whipping up. A few sentences will do.

If you don’t spend (honesty is the best policy) and you keep up on your daily comments, you’ll be eligible to upload a photo to the MCU Facebook page and write about your experience. Whoever has the most votes by Feb. 11, 2015, will win the grand prize of $300.

Okay-to-Spend List

We all have bills to pay and MCU understand that sometimes life can surprise us. So, we’ve made a list of allowances:

Bills –Rent, utilities, car payments – some things are simply unavoidable.

Gas –For your car, not the snowblower.

Emergencies –Hospital visits, doctor appointments, car trouble and so forth.

Medications/Prescriptions –Staying healthy is priceless, after all.

Think you’ve got what it takes? Sign up by commenting on this post with your first and last name. Remember, the contest officially begins Jan. 26. In the meantime, it’s probably not a bad idea to start stocking up on supplies. Good luck!

  1. It’s amazing what you can with budgeting . I am learning to stop and think how to stretch that dollar. Thank you for the motivation.

  2. This is certainly quite a challenge for me! I got so overwhelmed with multiple computer and sign in problems with WordPress and the challenge application that I stayed up very late working on it, and got too sleepy, and dozed off! So I missed my late nite chance to go shop for more supplies! Creative problem-solving is now in gear, as a result! i definitely have to think outside the box! Next project: exploring my freezer, digging in behind the foods I save for my son’s visits, who has a different diet than I do, and searching to see what else I can eat that’s hidden there! I’ll keep you posted! 🙂

  3. Interesting how the mind works, when you’re passing by a familiar grocery store, where you used to stop frequently for food and other necessities. A part of you wants to go there, like on automatic pilot, whether or not you actually are planning to buy something. With this Challenge, I have to rewire my mental processes to tell myself, no, I really don’t need to go there, I have enough food at home, I’ll be okay for a few more days! It’s getting harder though. I usually depend on fresh veggies and fruits, and I’m almost out, will need to use more canned and frozen stuff (and no progress on the freezer sorting yet, no time to do that yesterday!)

  4. Interesting how this changes my perspective, and my habit patterns. One is about planning what to eat without adding anything from the store, brainstorming about ways to combine what foods I have on hand, and being creative about using up what I shouldn’t waste! Also the habit after I’ve gone to some event for the evening and adjusting since I just don’t have any need to stop at the store on the way home! These are totally different patterns in organizing those parts of my daily schedule!
